WAIVERS
Waivers is the time period in which a player, who is dropped from the NHL roster on a 1-Way contract, is subject to being claimed by another team before they are placed on the AHL roster.
Only 1-Way players are subject to waivers.
Waivers is only effective during the season. No waivers in the offseason.
"Standard [ESPN] leagues use the following method for determining which team has priority in waiver claims.
Move to last after claim, never reset order - The team which makes the most recent pickup is automatically moved to the last slot.
Waiver claims can be made at any time before the player clears waivers. Any player who is dropped within 24 hours of a game start is not available to be added to a team roster, and will appear on waivers 8 hours after being placed on waivers.
Waivers process daily beginning at 3 a.m. ET" (ESPN).
CLAIMING PLAYERS
"The standard game system enforces a 1-day waiver period during which time all team owners are allowed to put a waiver claim in to add him to their team. Players on waivers are listed with the day of the week the player is scheduled to clear waivers (ie, "WA (Thu)"). To put a waiver claim in on a player, click the "Add" button. At this time you will be brought through the appropriate adjust roster and confirm transaction pages to submit the claim" (ESPN).
When a player is claimed, the team that claimed the player takes on the entire contract. The player is placed immediately on the NHL roster, and is subject to waivers if the claiming team subsequently drops him to the AHL roster.
RELEASED PLAYERS
Owners can drop any player from their roster at any point during the season.
NOTE: see FP rules about releasing FPs
When a player is released with two or three years left on his contract it is considered a "buyout."
Buyout: Releasing a player with two (2) or three (3) years remaining on the contract. If a player is bought out, all salary is retained and counts against the NHL cap for the duration of the contract.
Released players are dropped straight to free agency. They do not pass thru waivers before being released.
As long as a released player is eligible for free agency, they may be put up for bid.
