NHL Roster: 82M (20M for FPs) FP's has gone from 20M to 15M at the beginning of the 2024-2025 season.
AHL Roster: 15M Salary Cap will rise to 20M at the beginning of the 2024-2025 Season.(July 10/23)
CAP PENALTIES
Buyouts: Penalty for releasing a player with two (2) or three (3) years remaining on their contract. If you release a player with more than one year remaining, you must retain his salary for the remainder of the contract.
FP Salary Adjustment: If you have to modify the contract of a player promoted to FP down to fit within the 20M for FPs, you must retain the difference for the remaining years left on all FP contracts.
NOTE: All cap penalties count against the NHL cap.
STARTING ROSTER (NHL)
The NHL roster refers to the ESPN roster. There are 29 spots (17 active, 12 inactive) on the NHL roster.
Only players who are dressed, or active, will contribute to your team's matchup totals. Stats generated by bench players will not contribute to your team's matchup total.
ACTIVE ROSTER (17)
Dressed
3 F
2 C
2 RW
2 LW
4 D
2 UTIL
2 G
INACTIVE ROSTER (12)
Scratched
6 BENCH
6 IR
INJURED RESERVE (IR)
All teams have six (6) IR spots.
Players on IR do not count towards the cap unless that player is a Franchise Player (FP).
If you have filled all three IR spots, you will not receive extra spots for additional injuries. Any additional injured player must be placed on the bench or sent to the AHL, and continue to count towards the cap.
Players who are eligible for IR are designated with an asterisk and an IR or OUT icon next to their name. Suspended players, SSPD, are not IR-eligible.
As per ESPN, "IR-eligible players can only be moved to the IR slot from your active roster or bench. Players can not be added directly to your IR slot from free agency, as you must first add the player to an open bench slot.
NOTE: Once a player is off the IR (no longer IR eligible), the player must be placed back on the team roster before the team owner can complete another player related transaction (add, drop, etc)."
MINOR LEAGUE ROSTER (AHL)
The minor league roster refers to a team's 12 additional players not listed on the starting roster. The AHL roster is separate from the ESPN roster. Starting of the 2024-2025 Season the AHL roster will go from 12 roster spots to 15 roster spots.(July 10/23)
KHL SPOT
The KHL spot is meant for players who leave the NHL for another league, namely the the Russian professional Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), while under contract with an NHL team.
EXAMPLE: Radulov, Kovalchuk
Prospects developing in a junior league (i.e. OHL, OMJHL, WHL, etc.), college, or an international league (SHL, KHL, etc.) do not qualify for the KHL spot.
Owners may not sign or draft a player who has defected to the KHL (or any other league), and place him in the KHL spot.
When a player in your KHL spot has an expiring contract, and still qualifies, he may be resigned and kept in the KHL spot for 100K per year.
GOOGLE SHEETS
The Google Sheets is a master list of every team's roster (NHL roster, AHL roster, cap, buyouts and retained salary). This sheet is updated after trades, waiver pick ups, FA pick ups, and released players. Salary cap is updated periodically. It is still the owner's responsibility to cross-reference these rosters throughout the season to make sure nothing has been documented incorrectly.
NOTE: These rosters do not reflect the ESPN lineups. They are a backup to ProBoards rosters to keep track of players, contracts, cap, and cap penalties.
