OVERVIEW
- ESPN Fantasy Hockey League
- Head-to-Head Most Categories
- Dynasty League (contracts, salary cap, minor league roster, rookie draft)
YEAR 1 - INAUGURAL SEASON - 2009-2010
Each owner was assigned a team, and he or she picked three players from that team to act as "Franchise Players" or FP's. Every team started with an $80 million salary cap, with $20 million of it split between a team's three FP's. With the remaining $60 million, each owner placed bids on players to fill the rest of his or her roster: 20 player starting roster, and a 10 player minor league roster.
Rule Changes -- effective Year 1 --
- No minor league cap changed to $15 million cap
- FA bidding changed from unlimited bids to two bids per owner (during the regular season)
- When owners trade an FP, the incoming players contract does not switch with your new FP's original contract. You must bump up or down your new FP's contract to make it fit in your $20 million FP cap
YEAR 2 - 2010-2011
Year 2 included the league's first draft. A four round draft with each round dedicated to a different type of player. The first round, or the "Rookie" Round, owners selected a player from the most recent NHL Draft. The second round, or "Future FP" Round, owners selected a player from his or her team name. The third round, or "Youngster" Round, owners selected a player 24 years or younger. And the fourth round, or "Veteran" Round, owners selected a player 25 years or older. Because of the draft, the roster was expanded and the salary cap was increased. The starting roster is now made up of 22 players (two more bench spots), and the minor league roster is 12 players. The salary cap was increased to $82 million. The draft format of each round will remain the same going forward, and no more roster spots will be added in future years, and the salary cap will remain at $82 million.
Rule Changes -- effective Year 2 --
- Divisions (4 divisions, 5 teams in each division)
- Owners cannot gain cap space when promoting a player to become a new FP. Owners must pay the remaining salary if it is needed to bump a players contract down to fit the $20 million FP cap
- The only way owners can promote an FP is if you trade one, or one is traded in real life. Owners cannot swap a non-FP player to become FP
- During the regular season owners can only sign free agents who have NHL experience (one game)
YEAR 3 - 2011-2012
Like Year 2, the third year includes a four round draft and the roster and cap will remain the same.
Rule Changes -- effective Year 3 --
- A wage scale and "elite" player status - Players picked in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds are signed according to a wage scale. If a player is considered "elite" he becomes ineligible to be drafted and can only be bid on during free agency
- Owners may skip their 4th Round draft choice if they choose to do so
- Owners must have three FP's at all times during the regular season (see FPs for further explanation)
- If an owner trades a FP, he cannot become that owner's FP again if the owner reacquires that player at a later time
- When an owner trades an FP, that owner must promote a new FP by the end of the current matchup. Players released during the last two months of the regular season cannot be drafted
YEAR 4 - 2012-2013
Like Year 3, the fourth year includes a four round draft and the roster and cap will remain the same.
Rule Changes -- effective Year 4 --
- Owners are allowed to drop one, two, or three of their FPs once the FP contracts run out (every three years). However, teams that choose to drop an FP cannot bid on him in free agency (at anytime during the offseason)
- 10 playoff teams
- GS and MIN are removed from the scoring, and SHG category is replaced by SHP and PPG is replaced by PPP
- During the regular season, a signed free agent must remain on a team's roster (minor or stating roster) for at least 72 hours before he can be released
- The opening bid made on inseason free agents does not account for an owners first bid. After the opening bid all owners are allowed two bids
YEAR 5 - 2013-2014
Like Year 4, the fifth year includes a four round draft and the roster and cap will remain the same.
Rule Changes -- effective Year 5 --
- 50 Percent Rule: In trades, up to 50% of a player's total contract can be eaten, and each season 50% of the per year amount can be eaten by the owner who traded the player
- Owners cannot retain a portion of a player's future contract.
NOTE: all rule changes made since the end of Year 3 are highlighted in teal throughout the league rules
